Rugosa Roses
I've always adored rugosa roses, and over the years have collected as many as I can to squash into my garden. I check the local nurseries for new hybrids as well as the old-fashioned varieties. I love the foliage, and I've read that they rarely get 'bugged' by aphids. And of course some set the most beautiful rose hips in autumn. Yeay for rugosas! I hope you'll find your favourite rugosa rose in my collection.
-
David Thompson Rugosa Rose...
- One of my favourite new roses is the rugosa hybrid David Thompson, a pink beauty. He's a very healthy, happy rose - a medium shrub, densely branched, with that beautiful clean green rugosa foliage.
-
Rugspin Rugosa Rose...
- Rugspin is a striking rose - a rugosa, single, with magenta-red (AKA carmine) coloured flowers. All the online nurseries agree - it's healthy, grows quite tall, and has beautiful hips in autumn.
-
Roseraie de L'Hay Rose...
- Roseraie de L'Hay is one of my most successful rugosa roses. The flowers are wonderfully fragrant with a soft, relaxed form - 'neither purple nor crimson, but somewhere in between', to quote the New Zealand rosarian Trevor Griffiths.

Yellow Dagmar Hastrup AKA Topaz Jewel...
- Have just watered one of my newish roses, the rugosa 'Yellow Dagmar Hastrup'. But she is puzzling me. The original Frau Dagmar Hastrup (which grows by the glasshouse) is a single pale pink rugosa with large blooms. This yellow rose sounds like a relation, but is quite different. Something's funny!
-
Pink Grootendorst Rose...
- I bought some pink Grootendorst rugosa roses in a sale. I love rugosas, I love the colour pink, and I love good cheap shrubs - not that any self-respecting gardener needs any reasons to buy new roses...
-
Corylus Rugosa Rose...
- I fell in love with rugosa roses early in my country gardening life. Of course I love rose flowers, but rugosas also have wonderful textural foliage. The rose Corylus is one of my latest leafy rugosa treasures.
-
Yellow Agnes Rugosa Rose...
- This is the well known yellow rugosa rose Agnes. It is one of the first to flower in the garden near the glass-house, and the soft amber lemon flowers look beautiful against its strong green rugosa foliage.
-
Robusta Rugosa Rose...
- Robusta is a modern rugosa rose hybrid which has crimson red single flowers. The name describes the rose perfectly - Robusta is very thorny and extremely vigorous. Strong red against strong green is such an appealing colour combination, too.
