David Thompson Rugosa Rose
David Thompson Roses
One of my favourite new roses is the rugosa hybrid David Thompson, a pink beauty. He's a very healthy, happy rose - a medium shrub, densely branched, with that beautiful clean green rugosa foliage.
A Canadian rose...
David Thompson was bred by Canadian rose breeder, Felicitas Svejda in 1970, intended to withstand the harsh Canadian winters and be happy in the short growing season. He loves my garden, where the winters are very moderate, and the growing season can spans six months.
He's planted in the sunny Hump Garden, at the side of a path. The only problem is that he keeps expanding and the path only just fits (it's already been shifted once). I refuse to prune him sideways, if that makes any sense. His flowers are far too beautiful. But be careful when you push past him - those canes are incredibly thorny!
The man David Thompson (1770–1857) was a British-Canadian fur trader, surveyor, and cartographer. The rose's breeding : 'Schneezwerg' x 'Fru Dagmar Hastrup'.
