Takanini Camellia

 Flowering by the Koru Courtyard.
Camellia Takanini

Camellia Takanini is a Japonica hybrid bred in New Zealand by well known Camellia enthusiast Neville Haydon. The flowers are a gorgeous muddy blood red in colour. They have pretty frilly centres, and in my garden they seem to bloom for ages.

Interesting colour...

Takanini was recommended to me by a gardening friend as having an 'interesting colour'. This adjective often implies something less than beautiful, but I went out and bought three anyway - as one does. I planted them on the edge of the Dog-Path garden, near the spiral brick courtyard.

That was back in 2013, and they've taken over ten years to bulk out. But that's perfectly OK. Their winter colour is definitely interesting - much more so than the scarlet red Camellias which seem to fill up the nurseries.

 Wet!

Periodically I dump horse manure around them, trim the Pittosporum branches from above them, and compliment them on their extremely beautiful colour.

And, of course, I thank them for providing me with such beautiful photographs.
