Beth Chatto Autumn Garden

The Beth Chatto Gardens started as an overgrown wasteland with poor gravel soil and boggy hollows. It has been transformed into an informal garden, with specialist garden area, such as the gravel garden for dry plants.

Award winning gardening

The garden uses a very wide range of plants, chosen for their foliage, form and flowers. Beth Chatto's planting considers ecological principles, following her late husband's research into the natural associations of garden plants.

The gardens slope down towards a pond and woods at the perimeter. Damming the spring-fed ditch has created a series of ponds in the valley. There are sweeping views over the garden to the surrounding countryside.
