Photographs of the Winter Garden

When I look at my winter photographs I see how bare and empty the borders are, and I try to visualise the growth to come. I shiver with the trees and plants as they endure cold rain, frost, and sometimes snow. Atmospheric? Enjoyable? Not really.

It Was a Cold and Frosty Morning...

I don't like my own winter photographs very much. The light is pale, the colours are dead, tinged with blue. Everything looks rather sad. But when I'm out in the midst of it all, the Miscanthus grass seed-heads can look magnificent and the striped Phormiums can appear rainbow coloured. Can't seem to get my photographs to show any of this.

Winter selfies...

Selfies in the garden in winter work OK. I'm usually wrapped up in layers of merino, wearing my blue check swandrii and my heavy duty boots. Bright blue! Yeay! A proper colour! And I am always smiling.

Me on Middle Path

There's obviously a knack in making a cold frosty morning without a beaming blue-clad gardener look artistic and interesting. I've tried all the Photoshopping tricks I know. I've tried experimenting with the angle of the winter sun. No joy.

Early Morning Frost

Even jigsaws of winter gardens don't do it for me. I'd much rather work on a picture filled with vibrant summer flowers.
