Recent Garden News

 Being modest, as usual...
Head Gardener

The Recent Garden News page displays the fifteen most recent additions to Mooseys Country Garden. This should help visitors keep up with what's going on in my garden.

Gardens are always growing and changing - there's always something new to see. And, as I love writing about my garden almost as much as being in it, there'll always be some new Moosey ramblings to read, or new pictures to look at. Perhaps the garden activities of my summer will warm up a northern hemisphere gardener's winter days. I know how much I enjoy my mid-winter garden visits to summery places.

Two weeks can be a long time in the life of a garden. There's inevitably some repetition, so please be understanding if I'm saying the same things over and over again. I hope you'll enjoy seeing what I've been working on recently...

Hello wind...Hello wind......
Hello, daffodils. And hello wind. You are in a fierce rush today. Settle down! How about takin it easy, breezy? Take a deep breath and exhale slowly? Cap on tightly, head down, I've been barrowing mulch over from the far fence line to the Septic Tank Garden. Back and forth.
Spring?Spring?...
When is the first day of Spring in the southern hemisphere? The beginning of September, or the spring equinox (September 22nd or 23rd)? I've decided on a personal definition - spring has arrived when I spring out of bed without wanting to linger.
Regarding Speckles...Regarding Speckles......
Speckles my stray cat has now been AWOL for five nights in a row. The small jar of cat milk I keep for him in the cottage is fast turning into cheese. Where have you gone, my silly, hissy, lovely speckly cat? Please come home. This is your home, right?
My new hand toolsMy new hand tools...
I MUST NOT LOSE MY NEW HAND TOOLS. I will keep them in a specially designated bag. Not in a bucket, out of which they get tipped when I need to use it. Not in the wheelbarrow, where they get caught up with the bonfire mess and heaved onto the fire...
National Dogs DayNational Dogs Day...
Yesterday, August 26th, was National Dogs Day, according to Casper, the talking collie dog that I follow on Facebook. Somewhere in the world, at least (in the UK, USA and Canada, for sure). In my New Zealand garden every day is Dogs Day
A large country gardener?A large country gardener?...
Yippee for gardening Mondays! Just had a scary memory of when I was trying to be a large country gardener (so to speak) as well as a Maths and Music teacher. Aargh! Never again, phew.
Finish, start...Finish, start......
Good morning. Today I intend to finish some things and start others. An incredibly deep and meaningful statement, this! The underlying workings of gardening life - on any day, any week, any month or year.
Hello, sun!Hello, sun!...
Have had three indoors days in a row, busy and happy, but not nearly as nice as being outside. Hope to make it up today. Hello, sun, nice to see you up there shining brightly. Hello, daffodils. Ha! I have Non-Gardening Partner home all day, and I am keen to organise him. I'm thinking morning cafe coffee, wheelbarrow loads of mulch, chain-sawing...
Mentally prepared...Mentally prepared......
Am prepared mentally for some cold, blustery, rainy days. Non-gardening days, for sure. Southerly rain fell all last night, which is great news for all my new Camellia plantings. Watered by nature is the best way.
Before the rain arrives...Before the rain arrives......
Have just mooched around the garden with my camera and the dogs to check on things before the rain arrives. Apologized to the Camellias - more frosts, more brown flowers. Said hello to several lone daffodils - so where did your mates go? Back in the day I could pick bunches for the house, and still have lots left over. Hmm...
Back to bed...Back to bed......
Friday was a go back to bed and sulk day (with my raging head cold). Tried to do some gardening - only lasted an hour. Not feeling well enough. Only had one gardening idea - to dig out the Hostas from the Car Layby Garden and replant them near the Septic Tank Garden's archway.
Busy keeping warm...Busy keeping warm......
Wow! What a wonderful day I've had. Disciplined, no short cuts, fun, making (hopefully) good decisions. And catching up, doing things that I should have already done. Busy (mainly keeping warm) doing 'circuits' with the wheelbarrow.
A new time trick...A new time trick......
So much to do, so much time. All the time in the world? Today I'm trying a new time trick : going backwards. I'll write a list of today's achievements first, then go outside and do them all.
Recycled Camellias...Recycled Camellias......
Hee hee. Have just won eight 'second-hand' Camellias in an online auction. Brilliant. No idea of the flower colours. The seller is digging them out for me, so Non-Gardening Partner won't be too annoyed. Haven't done this for ages now. And such a good price!
Thirteen years ago...Thirteen years ago......
Might be seen as a little obsessive, but I've checked my journal to see exactly when I last removed the Lamium from the Septic Tank Garden. I've been trying my best for over a week now to dig it all out. Aha! Thirteen years ago, at the beginning of the year 2012, with a further minor clean-up two years later...
