 Being modest, as usual...
Head Gardener

The Recent Garden News page displays the fifteen most recent additions to Mooseys Country Garden. This should help visitors keep up with what's going on in my garden.

Gardens are always growing and changing - there's always something new to see. And, as I love writing about my garden almost as much as being in it, there'll always be some new Moosey ramblings to read, or new pictures to look at. Perhaps the garden activities of my summer will warm up a northern hemisphere gardener's winter days. I know how much I enjoy my mid-winter garden visits to summery places.

Two weeks can be a long time in the life of a garden. There's inevitably some repetition, so please be understanding if I'm saying the same things over and over again. I hope you'll enjoy seeing what I've been working on recently...

A rather bad start...A rather bad start......
Me and July - we've got off to a rather bad start. I understand that it is a mid-winter month, but I sincerely and lovingly welcomed July to my garden, and asked he/she/it (them?) politely for a little weather kindness. That was four days ago. Since then the cold July wind has roared around and splattered everything with cold rain...
Still fixing the Dog-Fence..Still fixing the Dog-Fence.....
Am still fixing the dog-fence. But a small comment for the winter sun. Sun! You are just lazing around in the sky making silly long shadows, not doing anything useful. Get with the programme! Lift yourself up a bit and try and be warmer.
Fixing the Dog-Fence..Fixing the Dog-Fence.....
Yippee! A proper gardening day, even though the winter sun is as weak as dishwater. Decided I should start the repairs on my hopeless dog-fence. It has to deter Pebbles from barging into next-door's property and barking rudely at the neighbours.
Five degrees Celsius...Five degrees Celsius......
Oh dear. Huge apologies again to my winter garden. Came home from two music rehearsals, no rain or wind, so I put on my waders and went into the water race to clean the Gunnera patch upstream of Middle Bridge. Didn't even last an hour.
Winter solstice time...Winter solstice time......
My gardening for the next few weeks will be weather (particularly frost) dependent. It's our winter solstice time. On frosty days I can't pleasantly garden until midday.
Neglected...Neglected......
Just waiting for the day temperature to get closer to ten degrees - my threshold for pleasant winter gardening. I should go outside and clean up the Stumpy Garden's interior. This garden area has been neglected for far too long!
Exactly the same...Exactly the same......
Sometimes one spends all day doing exactly the same things as yesterday, and the day before that. Who says that gardening is repetitive? I do! But now the waterside area right by Willow Bridge is cleared. And the old willow stump is gone...
Waiting for the sun...Waiting for the sun......
Thursday is my day of going nowhere except into my garden. But oh boy! A frost overnight, one of those mornings where one wraps ones hands around a hot cup of tea to warm them up. And decides to stay inside a bit longer.
Carexes beware...Carexes beware......
Aha! I am still working my way down the section of the water race behind the Stables, wearing my waders, wielding my kitchen steak knife. Carexes beware - Moosey, the Avenger of Waterside Mess has been let loose!
Hello again June...Hello again June......
Hello again, June garden. I'm back, after a couple of days away from you, sorry about that. What would you like me to do first today? Water you? We've had a ridiculously dry May. Will put the hoses on right now.
Hello June...Hello June......
Hello June. Can I suggest you've got a bit confused with the calendar? Or even the hemisphere? Your very first day - temperature nineteen degrees Celsius - is much too warm for the first day of winter. Dare I say unseasonal?
Ready for winter?Ready for winter?...
Yeay! The weekend! Not that it make any difference. And almost the last day of May. Winter in New Zealand officially begins on June 1 for meteorological purposes. Eek! That's in two days time. I don't feel that I am ready for winter.
Some is better than none...Some is better than none......
Have had an enjoyable 'some is better than none' gardening week. It's cold until at least mid-morning, so my winter gardening hours are a little restricted, but only for reasons of comfort.
The stone path is fixed...The stone path is fixed......
Something I've been meaning to do for ages - reorganize the stone path which leads from the back door steps. Shrubs (particularly Daphne) have grown over the existing path, making walking on it very difficult. And wobbly!
Another new strategy...Another new strategy......
I have a new strategy for Non-Gardening Partner. Early this morning I wrote him a paper list of jobs and placed it on the kitchen table. I have higher hopes for the written word than the spoken one. NGP doesn't really listen properly to me - I wonder why that is?
