 Being modest, as usual...
Head Gardener

The Recent Garden News page displays the fifteen most recent additions to Mooseys Country Garden. This should help visitors keep up with what's going on in my garden.

Gardens are always growing and changing - there's always something new to see. And, as I love writing about my garden almost as much as being in it, there'll always be some new Moosey ramblings to read, or new pictures to look at. Perhaps the garden activities of my summer will warm up a northern hemisphere gardener's winter days. I know how much I enjoy my mid-winter garden visits to summery places.

Two weeks can be a long time in the life of a garden. There's inevitably some repetition, so please be understanding if I'm saying the same things over and over again. I hope you'll enjoy seeing what I've been working on recently...

Back to bed...Back to bed......
Friday was a go back to bed and sulk day (with my raging head cold). Tried to do some gardening - only lasted an hour. Not feeling well enough. Only had one gardening idea - to dig out the Hostas from the Car Layby Garden and replant them near the Septic Tank Garden's archway.
Busy keeping warm...Busy keeping warm......
Wow! What a wonderful day I've had. Disciplined, no short cuts, fun, making (hopefully) good decisions. And catching up, doing things that I should have already done. Busy (mainly keeping warm) doing 'circuits' with the wheelbarrow.
A new time trick...A new time trick......
So much to do, so much time. All the time in the world? Today I'm trying a new time trick : going backwards. I'll write a list of today's achievements first, then go outside and do them all.
Recycled Camellias...Recycled Camellias......
Hee hee. Have just won eight 'second-hand' Camellias in an online auction. Brilliant. No idea of the flower colours. The seller is digging them out for me, so Non-Gardening Partner won't be too annoyed. Haven't done this for ages now. And such a good price!
Thirteen years ago...Thirteen years ago......
Might be seen as a little obsessive, but I've checked my journal to see exactly when I last removed the Lamium from the Septic Tank Garden. I've been trying my best for over a week now to dig it all out. Aha! Thirteen years ago, at the beginning of the year 2012, with a further minor clean-up two years later...
Curses!Curses!...
Time for a mild gardening curse : Out, out, damned Lamium. Vamoose like a goose! Begone, nuisance groundcover. OK, I know your spring flowers are pretty (see the photograph on the left), but you don't produce enough of them. Get lost!
Huge plans...Huge plans......
Blast. It's raining. I had huge plans to be in the garden all day. Instead, have been cleaning out embarrassingly messy kitchen cupboards. Am not sulking, though. Gardeners do not sulk at gentle, honest rain.
The perils of groundcovers...The perils of groundcovers......
I've moved into the Septic Tank Garden (an evocative name, hee hee) to clean out all the Periwinkle (which shouldn't even be here) and Lamium (last attempt at digging was ten years ago, therefore sporting ten years of luxuriant regrowth). Oh joy! The perils of ground-covers...
Little by little...Little by little......
Throughout the week, every day, little by little, I've slowly but surely worked my way through the Wattle tree mess. Non-Gardening Partner has joined in, sawing up the fallen trunk and branches. I've carted barrowloads of logs over to the house for the log-burner, and smaller branches to the bonfire.
Needed : a winter motivator..Needed : a winter motivator.....
Some weeks I could do with a seasonal mental coach, a winter motivator. We are having a succession of very frosty mornings, too cold to go gardening until almost the afternoon. So I sit around in the house, drinking cups of tea, reading books, looking at things online to buy (I don't need anything), waiting...
Winter contrast...Winter contrast......
Oh my goodness. Have been looking through my older photographs. The spring colours are amazing. One forgets, surrounded by winter. But winter provides the best contrast, yes? And I can wait for spring. I'm patient.
Too easy...Too easy......
Too easy to visualise my new rhododendrons already lovingly planted in perfect positions, watered, blanketed with mulch. But they are still in their pots by the garage. This will not do. This morning I am off to dig holes and get muddy, and actually get them in the ground.
Theme for July...Theme for July......
Funny how I have gardening themes. Last month it was mass planting Agapanthus. This month it's trimming Ferns, Carexes, and Phormiums which grow along the water race. At the time of year when the water is at its coldest...
Clearing the Water Race...Clearing the Water Race......
Thursday 10th July 2025 - a day of release. And music rehearsals, new rhododendrons, and new hand tools. Lots of blue skies, but no gardening. Lots of piano playing with sore, slow fingers (from overuse of secateurs).
Spirit chills...Spirit chills......
Brr... Winter 2025 seems colder than other years, even when I'm sitting in my house in front of the log-burner. Strange. Oh well. Perhaps it's all in the mind...
